Whirling Melodies
The year 2005 marks the 100th Anniversary of the
Gustav Denzel Menagerie Carousel at Ontario Beach Park in
Rochester, New York. On the scenic shore of Lake Ontario,
"The Duchess" spins around in her original home - long
after the other rides comprising the "Coney Island Of Western New York"
passed into the annals of amusement park history.
Under the auspices of the Monroe County Parks Department,
extensive restoration of the carousel began in 1984 and continued
for many years with improvements to the carousel building
and surrounding walkways as well.
One of only fourteen operating menagerie carousels in
the United States, "The Duchess" is New York State's only
antique Dentzel carousel: spinning around every summer with
her collection of exotic and domestic animals whirling to
the music of the 1985 Stinson Organ. Until recent years
Wurlitzer Military Band Organ Style 165 paper rolls were
played on the organ - now a Stinson MIDI system plays
the same music once heard on the original rolls.
Celebrate the summer of 2005 and the 100th anniversary of the Dentzel Carousel
